About Jute

‘Jute’ is coined from the word Jhuta or Jota an Orrian word. Jute a vegetable fibre is produced from plants in the genus corchorus and belongs to the family Malvaceae. It is a natural fibre and stands second to cotton in the amount of production and the variety of uses. Jute is composed mainly of plant materials cellulose and lignin which is partially textile fibre and partially wood.

Origin of Jute

Jute is said to have originated in Indo-Burma. Jute was cultivated in Bengal in ancient times. It was at that time a garden plant and was used as a vegetable and as a medicinal plant.

Jute was once known as the ‘Golden fibre’ of Bangladesh since it was an important cash crop of this country. Jute is now grown in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Brazil with temperatures between 28⁰C and 35⁰C. Jute one of the age old industries of India is now flourishing since its versatility is now being highlighted as the world looks for natural packaging options. Jute is now an ideal solution in soil conservation campaigned by Environmentalists and Industrialists alike.

Different types of Jute

Jute fiber is called Hessian and fabrics made from them are called Hessian cloth, jute sacks often called gunny bags. Jute fabrics are also known as burlap in North America. Jute after procurement is grades are given according to its colour strength and fibre length. The colour strength is likely to be 1-4 meters long and after the processing cycles like cutting, carding, drawing, spinning, reeling, plying and twisting it is pressed into hales, uses of jute fibre. It is used in the manufacture of containers for planting young tree, which can be planted directly into the soil, along with the container. Jute cloth prevents soil erosion since it is bio-degraded in nature. Jute fibres are used alone degradable in nature. Jute fibre are used alone o blended with other fibre to make twines and ropes. It is also used in making paper. The fine jute threads are useful in the making of imitation silks. Jute is also used in the manufacture of sacks, carpets, wrapping fabrics and construction fabrics.
